Apprentice challenge
An Ashburton building apprentice has won the Mid-South Canterbury New Zealand Certified Builders (NZCB) Apprentice Challenge for 2022.
Scott Dallas, 22, a building apprenticeship at H2 Builders in Ashburton and the only entrant from Mid-South Canterbury, won the title after competing alongside Canterbury entrants in the event on April 9 at Hamptons ITM in Christchurch.
As well as winning the regional champion title, Dallas also won a $500 ITM voucher to redeem on trade tools and earned a place in the national final representing Mid-South Canterbury at the national final at the NZCB Annual Conference in Hamilton in November.
NZCB industry pathways and apprenticeship manager, Nick Matthews, said the competition highlighted the "high-calibre of passionate apprentices" training in the industry, following a record uptake of building apprenticeships in recent years.
Matthews said the events are a great opportunity to give the community an inside look at building apprenticeship training, and to celebrate those apprentices that have excelled in their field.

Poll: Do you have a go-to adverse-weather checklist for your family? ☔⚠️
As reported in the Press, the same low-pressure system that lashed the North Island over the weekend is now making its way south, bringing heavy rain and strong winds with it. It’s a soggy start to the week for many of us.
With more wild weather on the cards, we’re curious: do you have a go-to adverse-weather checklist for your family? Or are you more of a “grab the torches and hope for the best” household?
