Land-use run-off the possible cause of Akaroa beach's faecal contamination

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

Untreated sewage has overflowed into Akaroa Harbour three times in the past year.

Concerns have been raised over the source of the faecal bacteria detected at Akaroa Beach and Takamatua Bay last week, but the Christchurch City Council says its sewage treatment plant is not to blame.

The Canterbury District Health Board issued a health warning on Friday after high levels of enterococci were found in popular recreation spots. People have been warned not to use the water for recreational use, including swimming and collecting shellfish. The health warning remains in place.
