Infrastructure work, higher rubbish costs bring rates rise for Hurunui residents
The average rates bill in North Canterbury's Hurunui district will rise by about 6 per cent as the local council continues work to strengthen public buildings, improve water supplies and repair damaged infrastructure.
The Hurunui District Council adopted its 2019-20 annual plan on Thursday, which included a 6 per cent increase to the general rate and an expected debt balance of $39 million by mid-2020.
A council statement said it was a deliberate strategy to "manage affordability and debt while continuing to deliver critical services".
