Selwyn has now been confirmed as the third-largest district in the South Island (behind just Christchurch and Dunedin).

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

New population estimates released this week by Statistics NZ show the Selwyn region now has about 62,200 residents - an increase of 4.8 per cent since June 2017.

Mayor Sam Broughton says it's no surprise Selwyn keeps growing.

"The district has a host of advantages that continue to draw and retain people here. We offer land at affordable prices, a family-friendly environment, excellent infrastructure, great road and rail links for business – and of course, some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world, right on our back doorstep."

The Selwyn District Council issued 2458 building consents in the year to June 2018, and the district's GDP increased by 5.3 per cent during the same period – nearly double the national average.

"Growth has been good for us and Selwyn is in a fortunate position, but growth and change are not easy or cheap," Broughton says.

"As a council we continue to plan and focus on delivering quality infrastructure and services at affordable levels for our community."

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
