Sea Level Rise - Thames and other towns

Denis from Thames

The New Zealand Herald has taken up my story on my latest blog – which revealed the (as yet not officially published) government's advice on sea level rise to local councils. The Govt's advice is that new development such as roads, subdivision, intensification of housing areas will in future have to be 1.9 m above high tide, and for existing development councils will have to plan for at least 1 m of sea level rise.

The Herald story uses a map from my blog showing one scenario for projected sea level rise for Thames Township and quotes Mayor Sandra Goudie. Sandra makes some good points that local councils will need much greater financial help from Central Government to adapt to sea level rise. But she glosses over the fact that right now her Council has the financial capability and the expertise (with Regional Council) to identify and map coastal flooding and other hazards due to sea level rise. This mapping and identification needs to be done by councils right now, and there are no excuses for delay.
