Poll: Is free-range chicken worth the extra cost?
Hi neighbours,
Chicken is a popular dish for many Kiwi families. But are you happy to pay the extra cost for free-range or organic chicken? If so, why do you fork out extra for it? Although buying free-range chicken might be an ethical choice for many, it's not necessarily any healthier than other chicken.
As part of a new Stuff series, we look at why chicken is so cheap to buy nowadays, what happens inside the barn, why chickens get so big and the use of antibiotics in chicken feed. To learn more about what happens to your chicken before you put it in your shopping trolley, click the links above.

Wandering Livestock
🐮🐮🐑 If you see livestock such as cows, sheep, alpacas or other farmed animals wandering on the road, first report it to the police. If the animals are causing an emergency, or will potentially cause an emergency, call 111. If the livestock do not present any immediate risk, you can call *555 from your mobile phone.
If the livestock are on a local road, contact the local council. If the livestock are on a state highway, contact Waka Kotahi on 0800 44 44 49 (0800 4 HIGHWAY).
If someone else’s livestock wander onto your private land, the council is not required to collect or impound the animals, but they may be able to help you locate the owners so the animals can be collected. You have the right to impound stock that wandered onto your property – you can take the animals to the nearest pound or keep them on your property for up to 48 hours before taking them to the pound.
