I know that you started your work as an artist because you love art and to create and not because you love admin, accounting and tax. So I'd like to give you the low down on some basics that are useful to know about accounting and tax. You might already have questions you need answered, you might not know what you don't know. Both of those places are fine, and you might be somewhere in between. So I would love you to join Angela and I for an informal conversation over zoom in the new year.Who am I? I'm Anna Scott, a chartered accountant and silver Xero partner. I have been in private practice for 10 years and prior to that worked for Deloitte in Auckland and Wellington. I have been an accountant for almost 20 years. All that time dealing with small and medium sized businesses and individuals. Sole traders just like you. So we can chat about basic record keeping - how software like xero can help you, what IRD needs, when do you need to register for GST (and what does that mean), what to keep for funders.What is a deductible expense and what does that even mean? When do you start paying tax? And any other questions you might have. DOC is rolling out a new tool to help figure out what to tackle first when it comes to protecting our threatened species and the things putting them at risk.
Why does this matter? As Nikki Macdonald from The Post points out, we’re a country with around 4,400 threatened species. With limited time and funding, conservation has always meant making tough calls about what gets attention first.
For the first time, DOC has put real numbers around what it would take to do everything needed to properly safeguard our unique natural environment. The new BioInvest tool shows the scale of the challenge: 310,177 actions across 28,007 sites.
Now that we can see the full picture, it brings the big question into focus: how much do we, as Kiwis, truly value protecting nature — and what are we prepared to invest to make it happen?
