Auckland to Whangārei in 35 minutes?

Oliver Neighbourly Lead from One Tree Point

Ocean Flyer signs Seaglider MoU with Northport
Imagine riding to Auckland CBD in just over half an hour, on NZ water and through NZ air, powered by NZ wind and sunshine, with no potholes, road cones or landslides, and no four-laning or road maintenance needed. Compare that to a 3-hour ride in an obese diesel vehicle manufactured overseas, running on fossil fuel mined and refined overseas, with all the profits going overseas.
Whenever I read about new ways of transport, like sea gliders or wave skimmers, I remember that our own district council claimed during last year's consultation that there was "no evidence" of emerging alternative transport options, and that our only choice was building a larger airport. Yet the Ocean Flyer may already be up and running before council can even make a decision if, how and where to build that new airport.
It makes me so incredibly sad that we don't have a vision for a liveable future based on collective well-being within ecological limits in our district. All we are served is more of the same that hasn't been working for us, and we even voted for this (well, 40% of us did).
Sigh...

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

DOC is rolling out a new tool to help figure out what to tackle first when it comes to protecting our threatened species and the things putting them at risk.

Why does this matter? As Nikki Macdonald from The Post points out, we’re a country with around 4,400 threatened species. With limited time and funding, conservation has always meant making tough calls about what gets attention first.

For the first time, DOC has put real numbers around what it would take to do everything needed to properly safeguard our unique natural environment. The new BioInvest tool shows the scale of the challenge: 310,177 actions across 28,007 sites.

Now that we can see the full picture, it brings the big question into focus: how much do we, as Kiwis, truly value protecting nature — and what are we prepared to invest to make it happen?

We hope this brings a smile!
