Merkel
Germany, 2022, Documentary, (English subtitles), 97 mins, Rated M
Featuring: Angela Merkel, Tony Blair, Hillary Clinton, Condoleeza Rice. Director: Eva Weber
Eva Weber’s engrossing documentary of Angela Merkel is the story of how a triple political outsider – a woman, a scientist, and an East German – became one of the most powerful politicians in the world.
For years, Merkel, the first female Chancellor of Germany, was Western Europe’s most influential leader. Yet, despite her 16 years in the political spotlight, she remains something of an enigma. She put her policies first, keeping her personal life private.
From Merkel’s upbringing in East Germany, and studies in quantum chemistry, to her surprising start in politics and fast ascent, the documentary brings into focus a rich portrait of Merkel, using a vast array of archival material and interviews from friends, political allies and critics. The result is a detailed and thoughtful examination of Merkel’s life and career, told with humour, subtlety, and poignancy.
"A human portrait of the woman who would grow up to save democracy.” Indiewire

Poll: Should all neighbours have to contribute to improvements?
An Auckland court has ruled a woman doesn’t have to contribute towards the cost of fixing a driveway she shares with 10 neighbours.
When thinking about fences, driveways or tree felling, for example, do you think all neighbours should have to pay if the improvements directly benefit them?
