This storm has the potential to be a significant and damaging event. We know this will be unwelcome news for communities that have recently been affected by severe weather and are still recovering.
More rain falling on ground that’s already saturated, means impacts like fallen trees, landslides, flooding and dangerous river conditions are more likely.
Please stay safe in severe weather. If life, health or property is in danger, call 111 immediately.
During a storm, stay inside. Don't walk around outside. Don't drive unless necessary. Strong winds can fell trees and poles, tear off roofs, and cause branches and debris to fly at high speed.
Put safety first. Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water. Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.
Do not try to walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater.
If you see a landslide, move out of its path and stay away from it. It is important to recognise the warning signs and act quickly.
When it is safe to do so, check on your neighbours and anyone who might need your help.

Over Easter weekend in 2025, four lives were lost on roads – down from seven deaths recorded for the same period the year before.
Superintendent Steve Greally, Director of Road Policing, says we can all do much better.
We still need drivers and road users to make smart decisions to keep themselves and others safe or they can expect to be ticketed, he says.
“Our staff will be out patrolling roads at any time and any where over Easter weekend and we will use the appropriate enforcement action if motorists are thought to be risking the safety of themselves and others on the roads.
“We are taking a serious stance to ensure we don’t see more lives lost on our roads."
Police will maintain a high level of visibility on our roads in order to prevent unsafe behaviours and enforce the law with a clear focus on reducing road trauma.
Superintendent Greally urges drivers to consider the safety of others and their own when getting behind the wheel and consider how your actions, can change the lives of people in an instant.
“Decisions when driving can put a life in the balance that’s why it’s important not to overlook them whenever or wherever you’re travelling.
“Make good choices. Put that seatbelt on – both your own and your kids. You don’t need to drink and drive - get a taxi or a ride-share like Uber or Didi or have a sober driver get you home.
Never use your phone while driving, that distraction could cost a life, and slow down, plan your holiday journey so you don’t have to hurry anywhere.
"Any of these will improve the chances of you arriving at your destination safely.”

OPTION A reduces the previously signalled rates increase by half, resulting in 5% general rates increase. This maintains current service levels while recognising the pressure that many households are under. It does, however, create a $6 million shortfall that would need to be managed through a mix of efficiencies and borrowing.
OPTION B also proposes a 5% increase but adjusts sector shares so commercial and industrial ratepayers face a lower increase. This acknowledges the bigger share businesses currently pay, and the challenging economic conditions businesses are operating in. This supports confidence and activity in our city centre and other commercial areas. Like Option A, it carries a $6 million shortfall.
OPTION C retains the 10.1% increase signalled in the Long-Term Plan. Financially, this places Council in the strongest long‑term position and reduces reliance on borrowing at a time when economic uncertainty remains high.
Each option involves trade-offs. These decisions are about ensuring Whangārei can continue delivering essential services while preparing responsibly for the future. That is why community feedback is important so please make a submission.
