NZ MADE/NĀ NIU TĪRENI: Ngāti Awa - our story
The confronting truth of what happened in our recent past is something New Zealanders have to reckon with. When the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, Māori owned more than 66 million acres of land. By 1975, almost 97 per cent had been sold or taken.
In August 1865, a Crown force of about 500 men, drawn largely from neighbouring iwi, entered the rohe of Ngāti Awa in Eastern Bay of Plenty to execute an arrest warrant for the killing of a Crown official, James Te Mautaranui Fulloon.
