11th hour stay approved for unauthorised waste mountain

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Northern Outlook

An illegal mountain of baled waste that can be seen from the Christchurch Northern Motorway will not be moved any time soon.

The 4000 bales of rubbish at a site on Spencerville Rd, owned by Renew Energy Ltd (REL) and ERP Group Ltd, are destined for a yet-to-be-built waste-to-energy plant in Belfast.

REL also intends to store up to 10 times as much waste at a site on Blakes Rd,in Belfast, for five years while it builds the South Island's first waste-to-energy plant. Its consent application is currently on hold while more detail is sought by ECan.

Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey says residents are concerned about the proximity of the site to houses, a large aquifer and a stream, a cemetery, and a meatworks. Read more: here
