Attached is a photo of my sweet dog Maddie, an 8 year old Norwich Terrier. Maddie came into my life about 15 months ago to heal my heart after I lost my JRT called Pippa four months previously. She settled in immediately and is my joy in life. Loves her walks, her treats and cuddles on my lap. She’s just perfect in every way.

I am a great dog who loves to have cuddles, I love to have humans around me. Due to my young age I would be better for me to go to a home that has no young children. I can be a little shy with new people and then I am a bouncy bean. I would be fine for me to go to a home with teenagers.
So far I had a little bit of training, I am a bit uncoordinated and jumpy. With training, we both need to start from scratch. I am very willing to learn. You will see me blossom from an uncoordinated boy to a very well trained dog that will stick by your side. I need to be introduced to the world slowly as it can be a little overwhelmingly for me. I am great with other dogs at the centre and love to play. A home with a slightly older dog would mix well with me, so they can show me the ropes on how to be the best dog. If you are a ready for a new man in your life, please click on my profile and my heart could be yours forever."

Meet Carlos, a male mixed breed who is 14 months old.

"Hi there, my name is Carlos or Mister Wiggle as they like to call me here at the SPCA. I am a bouncy dude that would love a home that loves larger-than-life personalities. I would love to go to a home where my owner is prepared to continue my basic training as I had none prior to SPCA. I am needing a routine where I am not left for more than 4 hours at a time, this is just to begin with, until I am more settled into my new home. I am wary to begin with, with strangers but with a suitable home I will be coming out of my shell in no time, like I have at the SPCA Teenagers or adults would be a good fit for me. I could go to a home with another dog, one that is social, loves a good play and happy to show me the ropes. I can be a bit enthusiastic when meeting other dogs so the dog would need to be patient with me. I may be able to live with a confident cat."

The Rotary Club of Karori is one of 36,754 clubs with 1.2 million members in 220 countries and territories around the world.
Like all Rotarians, we share the ideal epitomised in the Rotary motto, “Service above Self”, and, like Rotarians everywhere, we translate our passions into relevant social causes to change lives and make lasting improvements locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Our club was chartered in May 1982. This, our 40th anniversary year, is an opportunity to reflect on, and celebrate, the Club’s many activities and achievements over the years. Here is one such achievement.
1986: The Marsden Club
The Rotary Club of Karori has supported the Marsden Club in Newcombe Crescent, Karori since its inception 1984. The latter provides quality day programmes for people with dementia and related disorders, and guidance and support to their caregivers.
In 1986, we established the Rotary Karori Marsden Community Trust and, over the next 10 years, raised $186,000 to purchase the Newcombe Crescent property from the Nursing Sisters of the Little Company of Mary.
In 1993, then Trust Chairman and Past President of Karori Rotary, Eric Aston, on behalf of Karori Rotary, arranged for British actress, Stephanie Cole (Aunty Joan in Doc Martin) to tour New Zealand with her one woman performances of plays by Alan Bennett (famed English actor, author, playwright and screenwriter). This tour alone raised $40,000 and helped us complete the purchase of the Newcombe Crescent property in 1996.
Applications for membership are always welcome
If you’d like to learn more about Rotary and the personal satisfaction and growth that comes from serving others, please contact Andrea Skews, E andrea.skews@gmail.com, M 022 073 5548 or Phil Oliver, E phil@praxissoftware.co.nz, M021 292 7001.

Do Blackout Curtains Help With Sleep?

Robert Anderson from Curtain Clean Wellington (The Wash House)

Do you feel like there is too much light in your bedroom at night or in the morning? Too much light in your bedroom could be severely interfering with your sleep. Here’s how blackout curtains can help.

Why does light affect your sleep?
Light is one of the key signals for your circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is essentially your master ‘body clock’ that takes its cues from your general sleeping patterns, light exposure and temperature. This body clock starts facilitating the release of the sleep hormone melatonin about 2 hours before ‘bedtime’.

So, reducing your exposure to light at night time may help signal to your body that it’s time for bed and help you achieve a deeper sleep. This means you should be avoiding exposure to sunlight, reducing your screen time, and dimming the lights or lamps in your bedroom. Unless you live deeply rural, you will also need to find ways to reduce light from cars, streetlights and other homes entering your bedroom. That’s where blackout curtains come in.

What are blackout curtains?
Blackout curtain or lining fabric is made from dense, tightly woven materials that do not allow light through. Because the material is dense, blackout fabrics also have great insulation and noise-cancelling properties.

How blackout curtains help you get a better night’s sleep
When installed correctly, blackout curtains (or blackout curtain lining) almost completely stop external light entering your bedroom, and so contribute to an environment that allows a deeper sleep. They need to full cover the window frame for the blackout effect to work properly, so light doesn’t come through the sides. Blackout fabrics will also help reduce your energy bill and make it easier for you to control the temperature in your bedroom – another crucial factor for your circadian rhythm.

Blackout curtains will drastically improve sleep for night shift workers
If your job or lifestyle mean you need to get your rest during daylight hours, blackout curtains are a fantastic way to reduce light exposure and ‘trick’ your circadian rhythm into producing melatonin.

If you would like to add a blackout lining to your current curtains or book your curtains or blinds in for a maintenance clean, contact the team at Curtain Clean on 0800 579 0501.
