Friends of Karori Cemetery - Murder & Mayhem Tour

Julia Kennedy from Friends of Karori Cemetery

We will be running this tour on Sunday 7th May 10:30am - 12:00pm

Karori Cemetery is the final resting place for people whose lives ended tragically – from drowning, from murder, and from accidents of all kinds. This tour includes the story of three militia men killed in a guncotton explosion; an attempted murder followed by suicide; a drowning or two plus other exciting stories.

Each tour is $10 per person (plus non-refundable booking fee). Children under 12 are free.

How to Book:
Please follow the link to secure your tickets:
events.humanitix.com...

Our tour has a maximum capacity of about 15 persons. If there are insufficient tickets remaining for your party, please email us on friendsofkaroricemeterytours@gmail.com to check if we can accommodate you.

Note:
If we have to cancel a tour due to inclement weather or sickness, we will notify you on the day by 9am by email and on our Facebook page. The booking fee is non-refundable.

Please dress appropriately for the conditions. While we do our best to guide you on a safe walking route, during the winter months the ground can become slippery in places.

Some of our walks require a moderate degree of fitness and are not suited for those with limited mobility. Please read the tour descriptions carefully to check that they will be suitable for you.
We look forward to welcoming you to Karori Cemetery.

✈ Understanding the DMAPS Changes ✈

Plane Sense from Plane Sense

We received this interesting question from a resident who has received the Wellington Airport consultation documents. To answer this question, here's what you should look out for:

🔎*Compare the old vs. new flight paths*:
*Page 7*: Old flight path
*Page 4*: New flight path (however, see more in the comments 👇)

🔎*Check page 2*: It mentions that pilots can request to deviate from the path, but 'occasionally deviating' is very different from being directly under the new path. Previously, lighter turboprop planes flew over, but now DMAPS concentrates jet engine aircraft over suburbs, causing a significant noise increase.

📊*Noise impact*:
*Old*: 54dB (prop planes) - this is what an Airways Report tells us.
*New*: Up to 80dB (jet engines) - actual noise captured by sound monitors in the suburbs (this isn't included in the consultation documentation). And remember, decibels increase exponentially like the Richter scale!

🚨Plus, unlike on the previous flight path, DMAPS means more frequent flights, with smaller gaps between them, and an increase in jet departures means higher noise levels for longer periods over the new path. That's why we're pushing for the DMAPS decision to be *reversed*, reverting to the old flight path - which isn't the same as sending all the jets over another suburb.
