“I am 83 living alone. My neighbours Grant and Annette Phillips were wonderful during the lockdown, getting my shopping and taking me to the dentist when I broke my dentures and had no way of getting them mended. When I needed help in an emergency they were there for me reattaching the connections under my bed which I could not get to.They have taken me to doctors appointments and helped when I needed help in the house after a fall and when my Medic Alarm has been activated.”

Roman blinds are becoming more and more popular every year but have you ever wondered why?

Here are our top 10 reasons for choosing a roman blind over curtains:

1. This type of dressing is perfect for smaller windows, which could be overwhelmed by a pair of curtains. Perfect for cottage windows, a roman blind will sit neatly within the recess without taking up any space either side of the window.

2. If you're a fan of a particular design range but can't decide between two fabrics, then have both! You could use one for the curtains and a co-ordinating fabric for the blind. Choosing two fabrics from the same collection is a guarantee that they will sit well together and compliment each other perfectly.

3. Perhaps you favour a clean, contemporary, minimalist look. Roman blinds are the ideal choice for this situation, as they have no fussy frills or extra fabric. A roman blind uses the minimum of material and looks like a flat piece of fabric when closed. It folds up concertina style to create smart, sharp folds.

4. If you have a radiator sitting directly under your window covering it with a pair of curtains will ensure that the majority of the heat produced goes up behind the curtains and sits between them and the window. A blind will cover only the window itself offering protection from draughts whilst still allowing the heat to circulate.

5. If you have a wide window or a bay window then the amount of curtaining needed to cover the window will be considerable. Opening and closing such heavy curtains twice a day can become a real bind. It's much easier to fit a pair of dress curtains and then use one or more roman blinds to swiftly open and close each morning and evening.

6. As a roman blind uses less fabric than a pair of curtains, you can use a large, bold or colourful pattern without fear of overkill.

7. Using a roman blind allows you to lower the blind to protect from the glare of the sun. The pleating style gives plenty of option between open and closed depending on how low the sun is.

8. As blinds site in the recess or just outside the recess of the window then they use considerably less fabric than a pair of curtains would. This means that it can be 25% cheaper to fit a roman blind than a pair of curtains.

9. Roman blinds can be the ideal choice for a kitchen or bathroom in which you don't want lots of bulky fabric hanging over your sink or taking up precious space.

10. A door curtain can become annoying as ease of opening and closing the door can be compromised with lots of bulky fabric in the area. A roman blind can be fixed directly onto a glazed door making life much easier.

So there you have our top ten reasons for choosing a roman blind. If we've converted you to the appeal of a roman blind, click here to view our extensive range:

It's here again! Starting at the beginning of August we are running the Complete Confidence Program. Specialised help for families of picky eaters.

It's my way of making advice affordable and manageable for all.

If every day is a food struggle, or you've long since given up trying to make changes because it is too hard or too upsetting, then this is the program for you.

1. The commitment is only to 15-30 minutes a week. Yes, that's it. Even in a crazy schedule it's not even a full episode of your favourite TV show.

2. There will be many parts of the program that are suitable for all families, even those where issues are very extreme, or you have the world’s most food-stubborn child (I meet a LOT of those). It will be helpful whatever your situation.

3. The program is tiny, bite-sized actions that will slot into family routines. Very little additional energy required!

4. If you’ve tried everything and nothing works: I get that, and it’s true for many of the families we work with, and yet we can still make progress.

5. Most of what we do will not be difficult for anyone and much of what we do will be a positive for your child. I know this from running programs every week. Children love a lot of the strategies we put into place. Rather than thinking of it as a big change, think of it as new, fun ways to approach things.

6. This is truly the BEST deal you will ever get. $ 12.00 per week is a very small amount to help resolve such a huge stress. You will also “get that money back” very quickly once you have a child eating more confidently.

7. I think it’s useful to reflect on how long eating has been a challenge. If it’s been more than a year, I would say the time is definitely now 😊

8. If you don’t feel it’s a fit for your family you can drop out at any time. The commitment is only from month to month. Very little to lose and very much to gain!!

As I know what will be in the program, I also know how valuable it is and how much you can gain from it. If you have questions, feel free to pm me.

If you’re sitting on the fence, honestly, don’t. Take the risk!

Water in Petrol – Hi I filled my car up with ZX Premium petrol at Z Petone at 10:34 on Sunday night.
By Wednesday morning my fears were confirmed, that something was not right, when I rang Simon at Brendon Motors (Karori) Ltd and he advised that the reason my car was not performing as it had been prior to my filling up, was that there would be water in the petrol. He said that is was a fairly common problem. It is something I have never struck before in nearly 60 years of driving. Shades of – “Your turn will come”. Maybe time to buy a LOTO ticket!
To fixed the problem Simon said “the old way was to put some “meths” in the tank but that could damage the seals. I could put a fuel cleaner into the tank, but results could be uncertain. The most satisfactory way was to have the tank removed, cleaned out, re-installed, and fresh (hopefully uncontaminated) petrol put in the tank. Cost could be in the order of $400+”
I have filed a complaint with Z and had an email from it’s Group Product Quality Technical Advisor.
I have been advised that they will look into the problem but it could take “14 days to complete the investigation.” which is very frustrating when Simon is advising not to use the car with that petrol in it.
Z Petone advised its’ tanks were filled on Sunday. If there is anyone out there who, from last Sunday on, purchased ZX Premium at Z Petone, and have noticed a drop off in the performance of their vehicle, most noticeable when going uphill, then please complain to Z and contact me because the more people that complain to Z, the less likely they can fob us off. If you know of anyone who may buy petrol from Z Petone then please share this post with them.
Thanks for any help you can give.

That's one of three techniques I teach in this Gelli-Plate Monoprinting workshop at my Khandallah studio. I have one place left for the workshop on 15th August - get in quick and it's yours. This workshop will show you the techniques you will need to make a range of mono prints using the latest synthetic gelatin plates from Gelli Arts. It's suitable for complete beginners as well as people experiences in printmaking. Using a variety of stencils, masks, stamps (some commercial, some home-made), and pressed leaves you will work with GOLDEN’s OPEN Acrylics to make your multi-layered prints without a printing press. You can then take them a stage further using High Flow paint in paint pens or with brushes. These prints make beautiful art works in their own right and are also ideal for use in collage, scrapbooking and greeting card making. Gelli prints can also be incorporated in layers into your regular paintings – the possibilities are endless! In creating several small art works on paper, you will learn about working with transparent and opaque paints and the outcomes of layered colour mixing. You will also use iridescent colours for some special effects. My studio is in Jubilee Rd, Khandallah, the day runs from 10am - 3.30pm and the cost is $140, with all materials and refreshments provided. Get in touch for more info.
