After 50 years without a sighting, the rare and quirky sailback houndshark has finally been spotted again in Papua New Guinea!

Because it’s been seen so rarely, scientists still know very little about it. But its striking features are already sparking debate about whether it should be given special protection, and some have even argued it could become an icon species for Papua New Guinea.

At a time when we so often hear about species disappearing, the return of this little shark is a reminder that nature can surprise us ... and that there’s always reason to hope.

You can read more about the sailback shark here

We hope this brings a smile!

Robin Hood steals from the rich and gives to the poor in an oldie timey place where people are struggling and homeless and the landed gentry hoard the money all for themselves – Wellington 2025.

Robin must stop the Evil Sheriff from running roughshod over the citizens! But this quest is far from easy… there is archery, swordfights, and a lot of dance numbers to get through. Our hero is grateful for help from spies on the inside: Maid Marion, and her bolshie Nanny (Pantomime Dame Jthan Morgan).

Come one and come all to see the slings and arrows of outrageous panto!

Hi everyone, I've been teaching painting to adults for 25 years, after taking a break I thought it would be lovely to run one or two spring or early summer classes. Classes cost $280 for the 6 week course, you'll be asked to buy one tube of oil paint and your canvas
(which I'll have in stock for you). I provide the brushes, acrylics and lots of 'step by step' information photocopies for you to take home and keep. Classes will be at the Haitaitai Community Center. My question to everyone is this, which days and times would suit people best? I'll create some classes from your responses.

Thought you were past your prime to become a rockstar? Don't sell yourself - or your health - short.

Research published this year has demonstrated that playing music helps keep dementia at bay - no matter how late in life the skill is picked up.

The basic idea behind this research is not new - we know that 'cognitive reserve' (learning new things) plays a big role in delaying mental slowdown. But the reminder that "it is never too late" is welcome ...

We hope this news brings a smile!

At about 11am today (11/09/25) I received a call from a man with an Indian accent saying he was from Spark NZ and that my IP address had been changed from private to public and that therefore its security had been compromised.
The first hint that it was a scam is that when I answered the phone there was the telltale sound of the call being connected remotely, it sounded like he was calling from his home.
The second hint is that Spark NZ is not my internet provider.
The third hint was he that informed me that it didn't matter who I am using as my internet provider (he quoted a few names of NZ internet providers but not the one that I am using), all the connections go through Spark and use their equipment.
When he asked me whether I had a laptop or a desktop computer I thought that would be giving away too much information (and also that it would also be unnecessary). I then told him I was terminating the call and he actually hung up on me.
I have just checked with my internet provider and they assured me that if there ever was problem they would call and not Spark NZ.
Just a "heads up" guys.

The volumes have decreased, partially in line with the ongoing recession, Wellington's population declining in the last couple of years.

Hello / Kia ora

The Greater Brooklyn Residents Association Inc invites you to their two candidates meeting to be held at the end of the month.

Firstly, on Tuesday the 23rd of September, we host the Mayoral candidates meeting.

Secondly, on Thursday the 25th of September, we host the Southern Ward, Maori and Greater Wellington Regional Council candidates.

We will run both meetings as follows (the order may change as we fine tune the running of the evening closer to the time):

# 7pm (sharp!) - Welcome to the candidates and audience, rules of the evening (introduction, no water pistols, respect for candidates and other members of the audience)
# candidates will all get asked some questions – requiring a yes/no answer or a very short explanation.
# Then each candidate will get around 2 possibly 3 minutes to talk.
# Then we will have some limited questions from the floor.

ACCESS TO THE VENUE

The venue is the Brooklyn Community Centre, 18 Harrison Street, Brooklyn.

The #7 and #17 buses all stop at the hub or near the intersection of Harrison Street and Cleveland Street. These buses come from the railway station or from Kowhai Park (#17) or Kingston (#7).

The #29 and #39 buses come from somewhere around/near Island Bay or Owhiro Bay.

There is a fence you can lock your bikes to.

There is very little vehicle parking in Harrison Street. So if you are close enough we encourage you to walk to the venue. If coming by car, plan to park elsewhere and walk. We can’t reserve parking for you all at the centre.

We look forward to you exercising your democratic duties, in a positive and respectful manner.
