That's one of three techniques I teach in this Gelli-Plate Monoprinting workshop at my Khandallah studio. I have one place left for the workshop on 15th August - get in quick and it's yours. This workshop will show you the techniques you will need to make a range of mono prints using the latest synthetic gelatin plates from Gelli Arts. It's suitable for complete beginners as well as people experiences in printmaking. Using a variety of stencils, masks, stamps (some commercial, some home-made), and pressed leaves you will work with GOLDEN’s OPEN Acrylics to make your multi-layered prints without a printing press. You can then take them a stage further using High Flow paint in paint pens or with brushes. These prints make beautiful art works in their own right and are also ideal for use in collage, scrapbooking and greeting card making. Gelli prints can also be incorporated in layers into your regular paintings – the possibilities are endless! In creating several small art works on paper, you will learn about working with transparent and opaque paints and the outcomes of layered colour mixing. You will also use iridescent colours for some special effects. My studio is in Jubilee Rd, Khandallah, the day runs from 10am - 3.30pm and the cost is $140, with all materials and refreshments provided. Get in touch for more info.

Rugby League: a New Zealand history

In this talk, historian Ryan Bodman will explore the value of social media as a 21st century history-research tool. Over the past five years, Ryan has been researching and writing Rugby League: A New Zealand History, which is a social and cultural history of the football code in New Zealand. As part of this project, he has developed a social media account under the same name, which promotes public engagement with his research outputs and has brought a collaborative component to his research process. In this talk, Ryan will explore the use of social media in the development of his book, paying particular attention to the value of social media to academic historians seeking to engage with people from outside of the university-setting.

John McCrystal tells the story of Aotearoa New Zealand through its maps – and the stories of the explorers who made those maps
John begins his tale with a focus on oral maps made by early Polynesian and Maori settlers: waypoints, lists of places in songs, chants, karakia and stories that showed direction. Centuries later came the great navigators, Abel Tasman and then James Cook. And finally it was the turn of the surveyors, explorers, rockhounds, gold diggers and politicians to negotiate the internal detail.
