If the answer is a 'no' or perhaps an initial 'yes' followed by an 'I've changed my mind', then who gets to keep the ring? And what are the consumer ins and outs of trying to get a refund on a diamond sparkler?

We're looking for individuals who are happy to share their story of a ring return: perhaps the break up was acrimonious and you've tried to cash in the ring yourself, or maybe your ex disappeared with the sparkler, never to be seen again. If you've got a story, please share it below (please add NFP if you don't want it used in print). And if you've got a really good story that'll take a little longer, please email kelly.dennett@stuff.co.nz.

Hi neighbours,

Many people setting up paddling pools for their children this summer will be breaking the law - are you one of them?

Any pool, fixed or portable, deeper than 400mm is now subject to safety provisions under the Building Act, meaning there a quite a few rules you probably aren't even aware of.

For example, do you have a 1.2-metre fixed childproof fence with a self-closing gate opening outwards?

What are your thoughts on paddling pool safety? If faced with an inspection, would your pool set-up pass? Do you think all these rules are essential? What are your tips for setting up a paddling pool safely?

Part 3 in our orientation to a Toastmasters meeting is the evaluation of speeches.

Members are assigned to observe and offer feedback on the impromptu (Table Topics) and prepared speeches. Evaluation helps everyone develop their skills - the speakers, evaluators, other members and guests.

The "traditional" model for evaluating a Toastmasters speech is "CRC" - offer a "Commendation" (positive comment), a "Recommendation" (suggestion for improvement), then another commendation. Our new Pathways Learning Experience offers a revised model - mention something the speaker excelled at, something they may want to work on and offer them a challenge for future projects.

We can be learners and teachers - it's at the heart of the Toastmasters experience.

People have been handing out poorly written cards with the sign language alphabet in exchange for cash - but they have nothing to do with any deaf charities.

"We know that they've been in different parts of Wellington [and] Auckland," said Rachel Noble from Deaf Action New Zealand.

She says a similar scam happened in the 1990s, and legitimate groups almost ended up having to pay for the crime. Read more

To continue our orientation to a Toastmasters meeting, let's talk about prepared speeches.

Each meeting includes up to four prepared speeches from members. The speeches are 4-7 minutes each, on a variety of topics and based on projects from one of the manuals in the "traditional" Toastmasters education programme (often the "Competent Communication" Manual) - or our "Pathways" Learning Experience, the online programme that was launched recently. Find out more about the exciting Pathways journey below!

Each communication project builds a particular skill - for example, structuring a speech, using body language or researching a topic.
