Now that we are in lockdown spare a thought for all the essential workers like Mark Shakespeare, from Wellington Free Ambulance.
He still has to go to work and face difficult situations helping the sick and the injured. At the same time, he has to keep himself safe.
“We’re giving more room between ourselves and patients. We’ll turn up with PPE such as masks and gloves. We’ll also ask several questions and depending on the answers, we’ll wear extra PPE to keep them and us safe.”
While the number of emergencies requiring attention remains about the same, the nature of the call-outs changes during lockdown, he said. Paramedics are responding to a lot more calls from people experiencing anxiety and mental distress.
Have you got anyone in your family who is an essential worker?

Dear neighbours,

We're all working from home during this lockdown, not just to bring you your favourite gardening mag, but also our Garden Diary 2022! This is where we need your help: Show us how you've been using your 2021 Diary -- take photos of the pages, tell us what was most useful, did you have enough space to write your notes, what have you scribbled on the pages? Did you clip your plant labels on them? Perhaps shoot a little video with your phone as you turn the pages. Your feedback will help us put together next year's diary.

Please email your comments and photos to mailbox@nzgardener.co.nz, by this Friday, Aug 27. The five most helpful readers will each receive a free copy of the 2022 diary.

William has carried out painting for me in two properties. He is very professional and reliable, and he works quickly and carefully. I am very pleased with the results and would definitely recommend him.

Mark Derby
I want to thank William Tran for the great job of getting my bathrooms and kitchen painted within four days. I am very happy and will recommend William’s company when I hear of someone who is in need of painting their houses.

John Piercy
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Zebra Painting Ltd for the superior interior painting job that was performed on my house. I would like to direct my gratitude and appreciation especially to William Tran. My decision on choosing Zebra Painting Ltd was based on William’s professionalism, knowledge of his trade and the confidence in convincing me that he would make sure that I will be satisfied with the results when the work was completed, and he was right.
I certainly will recommend William to my family and friends. Thank you again for doing such an excellent job.

Jennifer Thompson
Excellent job and very pleased with the result of the work. William has made such an amazing finish. Many thanks.

Christine Smith
I wanted to especially to express my thanks to William who was always helpful and went beyond his job to do some minor repairs around the house. He was very patient with me when I couldn’t decide on the paint colour and he showed me some colour charts and I narrowed it down to two colours that I liked and he had colour samples painted on the wall so I could see the comparison which helped me select the paint colour.
In short, Zebra Painting Ltd did an excellent job and the house and garage look great and I would definitely recommend your company to my family and friends.

This week we again feature Louise Thomas. What do you think the secret is to taking to good bird pictures?

"I've been teaching myself bird photography for a couple of years now. I usually try to zoom right in on the subject and move around so that I can get rid of any distracting twigs or leaves that might cover the subject or create unwanted shadows. Lately I've been thinking sometimes it's good to put a bit of habitat in, especially when it has such beautiful colours as this winter tree just starting to bud up. Kererū/ wood pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae), rocking those golden browns and forest greens."

Peepo - "A couple weeks ago we adopted Benjamin Button, now called Peepo. He has been a delight and a half, to say the least, and has grown so big in such a small amount of time! Slowly, he has adjusted to his new home and is now a superb older brother to his little sister, Namnam. The staff at the SPCA were super helpful throughout the entire adoption process, even giving us tips on how to introduce our new kittens. Suffice to say they are now best buddies."

We are lucky to have a free ambulance service and over the next few weeks it is likely to be under more pressure than normal. There are 500,000 people in the region and if 85,.000 text ONESIE to 3181 to donate $3, that would be an incredible $255,000, the cost of a new ambulance. You can also donate online at onesieday.co.nz
