Shelly Bay developer to rehouse little blue penguins
The developer of a controversial Wellington housing development at Shelly Bay has agreed to rehouse the area’s smallest residents before starting work.
The coastline is home to kororā/little blue penguins, whose burrows and nesting sites are in danger of being disrupted or destroyed by the housing project.
The proposed $500 million development will sit on the western edge of Miramar peninsula, undertaken as a collaboration by developer The Wellington Company and the Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust.
The condition is enshrined in the key commercial terms for sale, agreed upon by both parties: “The developer will be responsible for rehousing the little blue penguins that are located on council land at Shelly Bay.”

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
