The sad life of Hans Zittersteijn
Before you judge Hans Zittersteijn, read our story on his sad life of abuse and homelessness.
In March, three days into the level 4 lockdown, stressed and desperate over living in noisy transitional housing, Zittersteijn, 57, went to the police for help and then the hospital.
He waited five hours to see the crisis team but in the end all he got was a packed lunch.
It reminded him of the lunches he used to get at Miramar Central School.
Tragically, it also reminded him of a fire he set at the school in 1978.
Feeling stressed, he returned to Miramar and did what he did all those years ago - set the school on fire.
This week he was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
