Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington will host the commemoration to mark the 71st anniversary of the Korean War on Friday 25 June.
“An Act of Remembrance ceremony will take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Pukeahu,” says Neill Atkinson, Chief Historian, Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
The Korean War began on June 25 1950, when communist North Korean forces crossed the 38th Parallel into South Korea. New Zealand was one of the first countries to answer the United Nations Security Council’s call for combat assistance.
Some 6,000 New Zealanders served in Korea between 1950 and 1957; 4,700 were members of the Army’s Kayforce and 1,300 served on six Royal New Zealand Navy frigates, active around the Korean peninsula. Forty-five New Zealand servicemen, including two naval personnel, died as a result of their service.
Friday June 25 at 10.45am for an 11 am start.

Do you support taking cars of the Golden Mile?

The main thoroughfares through central Wellington are set to be car-free within three years after local authorities approved a dramatic revamp of the “Golden Mile” from the Beehive to the end of Courtenay Place.
Priority will instead be given to people travelling on foot or bike or bus, with footpaths widened by up to 75 per cent and bus-only lanes – one in each direction – along the entire stretch, which runs along Lambton Quay and Willis Street, then down Manners Street and Courtenay Place.
The changes were strongly opposed by retailers, many of whom are still suffering from Covid-induced flexible working patterns, but local leaders sought to calm their fears yesterday.

This weeks SPCA Pet of the Day is Scarlett the cat.

"I have come such a long way from the scared frightened little kitten found on a farm with my sister. I am now looking for a wonderful home where I can continue learning about this big wide world.
I will be quite worried in a new environment, so I will need an understanding family who is willing to give me the time to adjust. I would benefit from someone being around for parts of the day or another like-minded cat for company. I try to be brave and once I know you, I will really enjoy your company. I will just need time to get to know you. I really love the attention I get from my caregivers, so I know that in time, I will get to really appreciate you too."
