The human body is designed to move. Movement is crucial to how well our bodies are able to regulate essential daily functions. ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿคธโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ
By the same token, increased prevalence of sedentary behaviours is having a profound negative impact on our overall health and wellness ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿ“ฑ
Some of the potential negative effects are:

๐Ÿ’ฅ Increases chronic inflammation
Increases risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer
๐Ÿฆ  Increases chance of metabolic disorders
Increases likelihood of developing musculo-skeletal disorders like osteoporosis
๐Ÿคฏ Can impact mental health (depression, anxiety), and contribute to development of cognitive disorders later in life (dementia, Alzheimer's)
The body needs movement to function. Low fitness (or exercise capacity) is the strongest predictor of death ๐Ÿ’€. So the equation is simple:
Movement โž• Consistency = HEALTHIER YOU ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ™Œ
This does not mean we have to jump from a sedentary lifestyle straight to a comprehensive gym program ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ.
Research shows that committing to as little as 30 MINUTES of mild/moderate exercise per day can vastly decrease the prevalence of the health complications mentioned above! And that still leaves 23.5 hours for everything else!
So start adding 30 minutes of walking ๐Ÿšถ, jogging ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ, swimming ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ, cycling ๐Ÿšด, dancing ๐Ÿ’ƒ or yoga ๐Ÿคธโ€โ™‚๏ธ to your daily routine, and start taking charge of YOUR health. ๐Ÿ˜ค

Malvina Major Retirement Village

Our amazing Hillary Hikers from Edmund Hillary Village showed their support for Bowel Cancer New Zealand's Move Your Butt campaign this month!

Sporting the bright purple and orange campaign shirts, these wonderful walkers hit the Auckland waterfront and marched from Mission Bay to Kohimarama, raising awareness for bowel cancer and the importance of early detection along the way.
