My flock of six mixed breed hens have started laying again.

These girls are totally free range and spend their days munching on goodies they dig up in the jungle. In addition I feed them premium layer pellets and mixed grains to provide them ideal nutrition.

Cheers!

Garden Sort Out Tricks....

Ingrid from Brooklyn

By doing a few clever tasks now your garden will be sorted through summer.
 1. Do a quick weed.
 2. Plant evergreen shrubs to fill gaps.
 3. Put on mulch 10cm thick (reducing light to the soil). Option: lay down newspaper under the mulch (superettes often have old newspapers to give away).

I'm looking at the Serenity, which is the one that allows you to swap in and out different toppers. Alternatively, if anyone has had a particularly successful mattress purchasing experience, I'd be interested to hear any recommendations.

Kenwood Stuff

Rather than seeing the old stuff going to landfill I was wondering if anyone wanted the spare bits to add to the kitchen? There is the dough hook, K beater, whisk, grinder & mixing bowl. There is also the mixer itself. It does not work so well but if there is anyone with a child who likes taking things to bits to see how they work, it might make a nice distraction? Ohh & there's also an expandable cake stand which works but is not in the best of condition:)

New Zealand Police are conducting training exercises in parts of Wellington this weekend and are advising residents not to be alarmed.

Members of the National Special Tactics Group (STG) are participating in routine training exercises at Arlington Apartments on Hopper Street on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 August, between 9am and 4pm.

Another exercise is being held at the former teachers’ college campus on Donald Street in Karori between 10am and 10pm on Monday 13 August.

Commander of Police Operations Support, Inspector Geoff Jago, says the exercises involve pyrotechnics and Police in full tactical uniform.

“Members of the public may see armed Police at Arlington Apartments or around Donald Street in Karori but there is no cause for concern — these exercises are part of our routine training cycle to ensure staff remain well trained and prepared for a range of eventualities. We apologise for any disruption or inconvenience this may cause.”

With winter bugs doing the rounds, it’s worth knowing what the rules are about sick leave. So what are you entitled to?

• In general you’re entitled to 5 days’ of sick leave each year after you’ve worked for your employer for 6 months.
• You can accumulate any unused sick leave up to a total of 20 days.
• Sick leave can be used when you’re sick or when you need to be off work to look after someone else who is sick or injured (your partner, child, or someone who relies on you for care).
• Even if you’re a part-time or casual worker, you’re still entitled to 5 days’ of sick leave a year (once you’ve worked for 6 months continuously or for an average of 10 hours per week, and at least one hour in every week or 40 hours in every month).
• Your employer can require you to provide a medical certificate if you’re sick for 3 or more days in a row, and you’ll need to pay to get it. If they want proof of sickness sooner then they will have to pay the costs of getting the proof.

These are the minimum sick leave entitlements. Your employer can agree to give you more.

Check out our website for more information about sick leave and other employment rights and responsibilities. If you’ve got questions get in touch with a CAB near you, call us on 0800 367 222 (0800 FOR CAB), or contact us online.
