SPCA Pet of the Day: Meet Carlos

Reporter Community News

Meet Carlos, a male mixed breed who is 14 months old.

"Hi there, my name is Carlos or Mister Wiggle as they like to call me here at the SPCA. I am a bouncy dude that would love a home that loves larger-than-life personalities. I would love to go to a home where my owner is prepared to continue my basic training as I had none prior to SPCA. I am needing a routine where I am not left for more than 4 hours at a time, this is just to begin with, until I am more settled into my new home. I am wary to begin with, with strangers but with a suitable home I will be coming out of my shell in no time, like I have at the SPCA Teenagers or adults would be a good fit for me. I could go to a home with another dog, one that is social, loves a good play and happy to show me the ropes. I can be a bit enthusiastic when meeting other dogs so the dog would need to be patient with me. I may be able to live with a confident cat."

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

DOC is rolling out a new tool to help figure out what to tackle first when it comes to protecting our threatened species and the things putting them at risk.

Why does this matter? As Nikki Macdonald from The Post points out, we’re a country with around 4,400 threatened species. With limited time and funding, conservation has always meant making tough calls about what gets attention first.

For the first time, DOC has put real numbers around what it would take to do everything needed to properly safeguard our unique natural environment. The new BioInvest tool shows the scale of the challenge: 310,177 actions across 28,007 sites.

Now that we can see the full picture, it brings the big question into focus: how much do we, as Kiwis, truly value protecting nature — and what are we prepared to invest to make it happen?

We hope this brings a smile!
