IMPORTANT!!

We just received an email about RHDV1-K5 being released in the Wellington Region. Here are the basics:

* It will be released from 16th of April 2018.

* The virus is a Korean strain of the already established RHDV1 virus.

* The virus will be released at 30 sites across the region. Sites will mostly be on private land, or, on areas where there is minimal public access.

We have been told: "The release will be closely managed and carried out in alignment with the ‘Operational Protocol for the Importation, Distribution, Sale and Use of RHDV1 K5’ prepared by Environment Canterbury Regional Council and approved by the Ministry for Primary Industries."

The current RHDV1 vaccine (Cylap®) that protects pet rabbits from the current RHDV1 virus, should also protect them from the new RHDV1 K5 strain. As with all vaccinations, they are not 100% in efficacy. Here are some things to keep in mind:

* If you have not already vaccinated your rabbit, do it now!!

* If you suspect your rabbit is ill - call your nearest rabbit savvy vet. Do not take your rabbit directly into a clinic unless told to do so. There may be safety protocols in place to prevent infecting other rabbits on site.

* If your pet rabbit dies unexpectedly, call your nearest rabbit vet and ask for advice. If you have other rabbits on your property, we recommend asking to have a post mortem done. We also suggest telling your friends who have rabbits... if they visit you they could transfer the virus back to their own rabbits.

* Keep your rabbits area clean and disinfect regularly (including food and water bowls).

* Bring your rabbits indoors if you have a large enough space to do so.

* Do not pick grass/forage for your rabbits in public places. We suggest growing your own bunny food where possible.

Falling over isn’t part of the aging process

It’s ‘April Falls’ this month, and we’re raising awareness of preventing falls. We want to help you stay on your feet and living the life you want to live.

As we age, the risk of having a fall increases. Those over the age of 65 have a 1 in 3 chance of having a fall and those over 80 it’s 1 in 2.

Having a fall can be devastating and can often result in a broken bone, which is painful and can take a long time to heal stopping us from doing the things we love.

The good news is that many falls are preventable. A new movement called Live Stronger for Longer aims to help reduce the risk of having a fall so we can live an independent and active life.

Having good strength and balance is key to staying on your feet. You can find approved community strength and balance classes in your area and practical information, advice, and resources on reducing the risk of falls.

Live Stronger for Longer and join the movement today.

Proudly brought to you by ACC, HQSC, MOH and your local community health providers.
