The Minister of Civil Defence, Hon Kris Faafoi, mayors and representatives from the four councils, (Wellington City Council, Hutt City Council, Upper Hutt City Council, Porirua City Council) were in attendance to help open the first of the community water stations, and learn more about how they'll operate.
Wellington's drinking water supply network is vulnerable. Underground pipes and reservoirs could be badly damaged in a significant earthquake and as a result some suburbs could be without drinking water for more than 100 days.
Over the past 12 months we have been working with central and local government to develop an above ground emergency water network that will supply the more than 400,000 people across Wellington from day eight following a disaster.
It’s important to remember that following a major earthquake, the first thing people rely on is themselves and their families, so storing water is a must for every household.
You should have 20 litres of stored water for every person, every day, for at least seven days. That’s 560 litres for a four-person household. You may need to store more if you have unwell people, or small children in your home.
200 litre tanks (which are easy to install) can be purchased from your local council for $105.

Hear the inside story of the Topp Twins exhibition
Hear the inside story of how the Topp Twins exhibition came to be.
Activism, politics, humour, and self-created careers all fed into the rich tapestry of The Topp Twins and how their stories are told through this exhibition.
Sian Torrington, an artist, curated it for Te Manawa. She will speak on the particular perspective she brought to it, as an artist, and queer person.
About the speaker
Sian Torrington makes art, poetry, writing and performance. She has worked extensively in community arts, and currently works independently facilitating creative practice through workshops and seminars.
Her work investigates the creative process itself, through drawing, installation and sculpture, across abstraction and figurative work.
In her curating work, this focus on process involves looking for the stories and how they have been lived and created, and trying to reflect this authentically.

The Community Law Manual is a unique resource that is:
free
written in accessible language, and
targeted at those least likely to have access to legal services.
Conversation with past and present editors
Together with past and present editors, we will look at the evolution of the Community Law Manual from its early days as a simple ring-bound legal reference, to a comprehensive book over 1000-pages long that is updated and improved.
It is an opportunity to celebrate The Manual, to chart a course into the future, and to discuss the contribution of grassroots publishing to social justice.
About the speakers
Krissi Smith, Publishing Director — Krissi is the current Publishing Director at Community Law with over ten years’ experience in publishing and editing. Krissi has a background in Te Reo Māori, social justice and activism and has been with Community Law three years.
Nadine Hura, Communications Advisor — Nadine is a researcher and writer of Ngāti Hine, Ngāpuhi and Pākehā whakapa. She is the newly appointed Communications Advisor at Community Law.
Alexandra Kibble — is a writer, editor and community worker who lives with her partner and kids north of Wellington. She cut her teeth in radical book publishing in Australia and Latin America before moving to Aotearoa New Zealand and the Community Law movement here. Alex was involved in re-shaping the publishing programme of Community Law, including its online presence and its flagship Community Law Manual
