- Remutaka Hill road on SH2 was closed shortly before midday Friday after two trucks collided, adding further pressure to the road network at the start of Labour Weekend. The road reopened about 1pm.
- An earlier truck crash about 3.45am near Pukerua Bay on SH1 has been blocking the road in both directions. The Mainfreight truck was carrying hazardous chemicals and paint products. The driver received minor injuries.
Motorists have been warned of major delays, and light vehicles can use the Paekākāriki Hill Rd. The section of road between Paekākāriki and Grays Rd at Mana is closed and Police said it could remain this way until late.

NZTA regional transport systems manager Mark Owen said: "If people are heading out of town they need to think of an alternative at this stage, and it's certainly going to take a lot longer if they take an alternative route."
Police have asked motorists to avoid the area.

Wellington’s 2018 Poetry Slam Champion
It’s all been building up to this! Across the year, Poetry in Motion has been running poetry slams, now the winners will come together and battle it out to be Wellington’s 2018 Poetry Slam Champion.
Poetry Slam is taking the world by storm
Poetry Slam is the competitive format taking the world by storm. A high energy, enthralling event where performance poets are judged by random members of the audience in an arbitrary but totally engaging way.
Since 2011, many of Greater Wellington’s finest performance poets have competed and this year’s events have been no different. Sold out events, packed open mics and searing hot slams scream out that poetry is alive and kicking in the capital.
Cash prizes for the first three places
There are cash prizes for the first three places, PLUS the winner will travel to Christchurch in November to compete for the title of New Zealand Slam Champ.
Festival of Slam Wellington
For the first time this event is part of the ‘Festival of Slam Wellington’, a day of free workshops, panel discussions and performance leading up to this event.

Its purpose was to give residents an opportunity to express their concerns to the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) … View moreA public meeting of about 100 people, held on 13 September, had been organised by the Churton Park Community Association (CPCA) in conjunction with list MP Brett Hudson. Its purpose was to give residents an opportunity to express their concerns to the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) about the new bus network.
All five councilors for the GWRC Wellington constituency attended, joined by all three Councillors for the WCC northern ward and the two local MPs – Greg O’Connor and Brett Hudson.
After greetings from Brett Hudson and Greg O’Connor, the GWRC Council Chair Chris Laidlaw spoke of the Council’s regret about impacts of the roll-out of the new region-wide system, and the Council’s determination to get things right.
Members of the audience were given the opportunity to describe the problems they have encountered and how they would like them fixed. Recurring issues were:
• buses not adhering to the timetable (arriving early, running late or not showing up at all);
• the need to resume both very early and late services. Earlier buses are needed in the morning for people such as nurses who need to get to work for 7 o’clock shifts;
• services stopping in the early evening (especially the route 19 loop service) have impacted on the ability to work late or have a social life. Commuters now have to walk long distances in poor lighting and often inclement weather. This was regarded as unacceptable and a personal safety issue.
• overcrowding of buses into and out of the city, caused by buses being too small, or having to accommodate passengers from buses that have not turned up. When returning from the city, this problem is made worse when the bus is filled with passengers taking a short trip to the railway station.
• problems with buses disappearing from the information boards, not being listed or not arriving,
• significant problems with school buses (overcrowding and reduction of cross-city services) and poor connections available to university students.
Clr Daran Ponter explained some measures being taken to correct the situation. These include the revamping of timetables by mid-October; the right-sizing of buses to cater for varying passenger numbers throughout the day; measures to stop “bunching” of buses through the CBD, the hiring of expertise from overseas to fix the Real Time Information Board issues, and better driver training. He indicated that measures will soon be taken to penalise the companies providing the service when they do not comply with GWRC requirements.
Clr Roger Blakeley (GWRC) acknowledged the validity of points made by speakers and unreservedly apologised. He said that GWRC will do everything it can to remedy the situation as fast as possible and noted that the full-time placing of GWRC’s CEO on the issue showed the Council’s intent.
The councilors expressed their appreciation of the clear and courteous manner in which residents had put their concerns. CPCA is sure this reflects the ethos of Churton Park and the way the suburb conducts itself.
The CPCA will continue to work with the GWRC to work through the issues as they affect Churton park commuters.

Here are some tips to make sure you and your loved ones are well prepared and stay safe:
1. Check the marine weather forecast before you go out, it could save your life! 58% of boaties already check it. We want the other 42% to make it a habit. MetService New Zealand's Marine App makes it easy.
2. Tests your life jackets. Pull hard on the straps and see if any of them stretch or rip. Check all over for any existing tears in the straps and any cuts or punctures in the life jacket. If yes, do not use the life jacket, dispose of it, and replace it. Always check if it floats before putting them on. Keep in mind kapok life jackets should not be used as they can absorb water and sink, their cotton straps also easily rip! Burn them or bin them, but whatever you do - don't use or resell them.
3. For this year's Safer Boating Week, boaties are being reminded to “Prep, Check, Know” - prepare your boat, check your gear and know the rules before going on the water.
Let's put in the time and effort to make sure there are NO water related accidents or deaths this Labour Day long-weekend! Don't forget to look out for each other and report any concerns you have to local authorities.
