Esplanade safety improvements
We are improving pedestrian safety on The Esplanade in Island Bay by creating a 'slow zone' and making improvements at the Shorland Park foreshore crossing point.
The improvements will include a new pedestrian refuge island, new road markings, two 'staggered gates' in the Shorland Park pathway and a marked 'slow zone' along The Esplanade.
The slow zone still retains the 50 km/h speed limit but advises drivers of the change in roadside conditions.
Thank you for your patience while we make this area of road safer for everyone.
Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?
With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.
This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.
