At the same time have you been one of the many that have grizzled about the quality of those that represented us over the past three years, or the 47% increase in rates during that time, or some of the changes to the city that tend to benefit a minority rather than what's best for the majority of its citizens? Local Government Election Day is now less than a week away (voting closes at noon on Saturday 11 October, with Tuesday 7 October the last day for postal voting – after which voting papers must be dropped off at council ballot boxes to be counted). Lets get a more meaningful voting turnout this election. And please don't be put off by the STV form of voting. You only have to rank in preference those candidates that you like. It is not necessary to put a ranking number by those candidates you don't like. In other words you can vote for as many or as few candidates as you like.
Vote for a mayor and councillors, and whether we should keep or remove our Māori ward.
Check your mailbox for your 2025 local elections voting papers and post them by 7 Oct or drop them in an orange bin by noon 11 Oct.

The Long-Term Fiscal Statement just dropped. At first glance, it might seem a bit dry, but the message is pretty clear ... and a bit worrying. The big takeaway? Our financial pressures are only going to keep growing.

When you pay your WCC rates invoice, about 20-25 percent of this is GWRC rates, which, like the city council's rates, have risen sharply in recent years.
Given its range of responsibilities, GWRC should have a more prominent position in Wellingtonians' minds, but 45 years after its inception, it still has a very low profile. Most electors probably give mere lip service to their selection of GWRC candidates. Candidates are often ranked based on name familiarity or party-political advertising, meaning that prospective new and independent input is difficult to achieve.
Last chance to meet the Greater Wellington Regional Council candidates: Sunday 5 October 5pm-6.30pm, Hataitai Bowling Club, 157 Hataitai Rd. An exclusively GWRC meeting, without the "distraction" of mayoral and WCC candidates. All welcome: Come along and listen to and question candidates for GWRC.
