Some of us may be able to afford travel overseas and take the risk of a lockdown but the rest of us will be taking our holidays in NZ for some time to come. Our international tourist destinations are alive with local accents but accommodation can still be expensive for the average family of Mum, Dad, and the kids to enjoy an annual break. If this is your situation, Club Paihia is a private resort in the Bay of Islands that can offer members a week's stay for family of up to 6 at around about $1000!!! With 99.8% occupancy it has all the luxury & amenities that makes it one of the most popular destinations in NZ. If you are on a limited budget but still want the best NZ holiday ever, then contact Bill on 021904977 at FoCP to find how it can work for you!

Two bus services being trialled in Rodney have proved successful.

Auckland Transport (AT) has confirmed it will fund Route 126 (between Westgate and Coatesville) and Route 998 (Wellsford to Warkworth) from May, 2022.

Both runs are meeting patronage targets, AT said.

The services are part of a programme of transport improvements funded by the Rodney Local Board Transport Targeted Rate.

The programme features more than $40 million of improvements in the Rodney district including new footpaths, bus stops and extra buses.

Rodney Local Board chair Phelan Pirrie said the board was glad to be able to keep investing in transport during a difficult time.

“It was a tough call for the local board to set up this targeted rate and to focus on new bus services. But the community consistently told us that local transport infrastructure and services are important to them - so we’re glad to be able to deliver on our promises.”

Auckland's Harbour Bridge will shimmer yellow this week to mark Road Safety Week.

The Yellow Ribbon Alliance, a group of firms raising awareness of road trauma, is promoting use of the colour to highlight road safety.

Road Safety Week participants can show their support by wearing yellow or donning a yellow ribbon pin.

Members of the public are invited to go yellow to show their support.

Organisations will be reminding drivers to stick below the speed limit, especially around schools and communities, and to adhere to the 20 km/h limit for passing a school bus.

School students are busy making posters reminding drivers to slow down, and will be dressed in yellow.

In its 10th year, the annual week will focus on speed with the Streets for Life theme.

More than 80,000 speed notices were issued around schools last year.

One in four people killed on New Zealand roads were in a crash where someone drove too fast for the conditions.

Speeding was a contributing factor in 79 fatal crashes and 424 serious injury crashes last year.

In 2020, more than 4000 speed notices and more than 80,000 speed camera notices were issued for offences near schools during school hours.

Tīeke population 'severely impacted' by stoats at pest-free Shakespear Regional Park

Kia ora neighbours. Rangers fear stoats at Shakespear Regional Park may have had a severe impact on the pest-free sanctuary’s tīeke population.

The park, on Auckland’s Whangaparāoa Peninsula, is a sanctuary that provides wildlife, such as little spotted kiwi, robins, whiteheads, and hihi (stitchbird), with a safe and pest-free habitat.

However, a stoat was detected in the sanctuary at the end of 2020. It later gave birth, and two of its kits – a male and a female – were caught in traps.

Then, in January, thermal camera imaging suggested there were still stoats in the sanctuary, including the mother.

On Thursday, the council’s senior ranger at the sanctuary, Matt Maitland, said three more stoats had been captured, including two males and a female. It's believed one more stoat remains at large.

The sanctuary’s tīeke (North Island saddleback) population has been “severely impacted” by the stoat outbreak, Maitland said.

“This is the most significant excursion to date.”
