Learning te Reo Māori with a little help from Pā Kids

Megan Leov Reporter from Marlborough Express

The children from Pā Kids came in yesterday to help us learn a little te reo Māori by labelling items in our office.
Here are a few words you might like to use in conversation this Māori Language Week.

Whānau - Family and extended family; can include friends and other close relationships

Hoa - Friend/s; e hoa means my friend (e.g. Ka pai e hoa) and e hoa mā means group of friends (e.g. Kia ora e hoa mā)

Tamariki - Children; son is tama and daughter is tamāhine

Tahu - Spouse, partner or sweetheart; husband/boyfriend is hoa tāne and wife/girlfriend is hoa wāhine

Mātua - Parent/s or father; mother is whaea, and father is also pāpā

Hoamahi - Workmate or colleagues

Rangatira / Pāhi - Chief or boss

Kapa - Team, group or company

Whakapapa - Genealogy, ancestry or lineage

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
