Whangārei District Council has decided to keep its First Past the Post system for the 2022 election, but voters could demand a poll that could see the system changed to Single Transferable Vote, if there is enough support. In brief, First Past the Post is where voters give a tick to the candidate they support, and the one with the most ticks wins. Single Transferable Vote is where voters rank candidates in terms of preference, and the one with the most overall support wins. Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?
As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙
One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

Police are working to locate Steven Te Maru Walters, who has a warrant for his arrest and is wanted by Police.
Walters, 40, is wanted by Police in relation to breaching his release conditions and is known to frequent the Whangārei area. It’s believed he is actively avoiding Police.
