What's better than finding a needle in a haystack? Finding your missing wedding ring in the middle of a river.

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Northern Outlook

When Rangiora sweethearts Toby and Fran Gilsenan got married live on TV earlier this year, they planned to keep both their vows and their rings for the long haul.

So when the pair went for a Labour Day swim at the Ashley Gorge, they were gutted when Toby resurfaced minus his ring.

He had no expectation he would find it – after all he was searching for a small circle of tungsten in a river – but he spotted a sparkle after just five minutes in the knee-deep water.

"I saw a glimmer, what looked like the light reflecting on the water, but it stayed in the same spot. I thought it would probably be a piece of glass but when I scooped it up I realised it was my ring."

"[It's] not leaving my finger now, unless I'm swimming in a river," he says.

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?

Poll: Do you have a go-to adverse-weather checklist for your family? ☔⚠️

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Press, the same low-pressure system that lashed the North Island over the weekend is now making its way south, bringing heavy rain and strong winds with it. It’s a soggy start to the week for many of us.

With more wild weather on the cards, we’re curious: do you have a go-to adverse-weather checklist for your family? Or are you more of a “grab the torches and hope for the best” household?
