An investigation is underway into what caused an Upper Hutt College building to suffer "extensive" damage after a fire broke out on Sunday evening.

Emergency services were called to the blaze just after 11pm, which had ignited in a wing of the technology block.

No students are at the school today due to a pre-scheduled mid-term break, but a decision will be made later today as to whether the school will be open later in the week.
