Almost suddenly there will be six cafes east of the railway tracks in Upper Hutt. So no need for discerning UH residents to cross the lines in search of a great coffee and a bite to eat.

Here they are:

Silverspoon Cafe, Silverstream

Cafe Tuki,, Sports Institute, Heretaunga (8am-2.30pm Mon-Fri)

Racecourse Road Cafe & Bar, Trentham (8.30am-4pm daily)

Classic Cars Cafe, George Daniels Drive, Trentham (opening December 16 or thereabouts)

Grounds Cafe & Eatery, Blue Mountains Campus, Wallaceville 7.30am-3pm Mon-Fri (opening Nov 6)

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
