WHY ONLY A THIRD OF US GOT THE EMERGENCY ALERT

Civil Defence sent out a nationwide emergency alert to our cell phones this evening, but if you didn’t get the alert, you’re not alone.

Only about a third of phones will have received the emergency alert.

There are several reasons why your phone may not have received it:
1. Many older phones will not be capable of recieving the alert. To check if your phone is capable.
2. Your phone needs to have the latest software. Go into your settings to check if you have an update available.
3. You need to have the setting for emergency alerts on your phone turned on. On iPhones, go into Settings, Notifications, then at the bottom there will be a toggle for ‘Emergency Alerts.” Switch this on.
On Android phones, some may not have this option or it may be in a different location. Generally you will find it by going into your messages, opening Settings from there, and finding something which says ‘Cell Broadcast’ or something along the lines of ‘Emergency Broadcasts.’ Turn this on.
4. You may have an imported/overseas phone. If you didn’t buy your phone from a local provider in NZ (e.g. Spark, Vodafone, Skinny, Apple NZ etc) it may be an import which likely won’t be able to receive the emergency alerts.
What are Emergency Mobile Alerts?
Emergency Mobile Alerts are messages about emergencies sent by authorised emergency agencies to mobile phones enabled to receive Emergency Mobile Alerts. They can be targeted to areas affected by serious hazards.
If your phone is on, capable and inside the targeted area, you should get the alerts. You don’t have to download an app or subscribe to a service, just ensure your phone is capable and updated.
Emergency Mobile Alert is an additional channel to help keep people safe if there is an emergency. It does not replace other emergency alerts. If you feel your life is in danger, don’t wait for an official warning. Take immediate action.
How does Emergency Mobile Alert work?
Emergency Mobile Alert uses a dedicated signal, so it’s not affected by network congestion. This can make Emergency Mobile Alert more reliable in an emergency when mobile phone traffic or people accessing websites could overload the network.
The alert will be broadcast to areas affected by serious hazards for a set period of time. Any capable phone entering this area during the broadcast period will receive the alert.
It is expected around one third of phones will initially be able to receive the alerts. This number is expected to rise substantially over time as people replace their phones with newer models. Emergency Mobile Alert capable phones should work on all mobile networks in New Zealand.

The great Wellington fuel rip-off

Having just returned from a road trip to Gisborne, 1300km, we kept an eye on fuel prices along the way. Left UH on Thursday and the fuel prices for low octane was $2.04.9/ltr so filled up in Masterton. $1.79.9/ltr (.BEFORE claiming on the AA fuel card) Good price and so near to home too.
From there on they started to vary slightly, highest-- 1 little county fuel stop at $1.91.9, and lowest outside of Masterton,-- $1.81.9 in Palmerston North at a "Waitomo Fuels" station in Tremain ave on the way home. In between they varied slightly around the $184.9 to $1.89.9 mark. Gisborne being $1.85.9.
We arrive home today, Monday 30th and local fuel here has gone up to $2.06.9/ltr. TWO DOLLARS AND SIX POINT NINE CENTS.
Now can anyone tell me WHY we pay such high prices. The shipping fuel storage is at Seatoun. Palmerstons has to be trucked overland. Wairoa's has to be trucked in over mountainous hills and ours needs delivering up to 50km on flat sealed highways.
The sooner Northern Fuels brings competition here the better me thinks. Whats your opinion on the local fuel situation? are we paying a built-in levy somewhere?? You tell me.

WARMER WEATHER HEATS UP HOUSING MARKET

The Trade Me Property Price Index shows the national average for October rising by 2.7% to $623,700 from September.

It's been lean pickings for buyers over the last five months, with little housing stock available nationwide, but October saw the market perk up with 30% more listings on the site than in September.

Trade Me Property head Nigel Jeffries says that this time of year is usually buoyant, but it's taken longer than usual for the market to kick into action.

“Usually by this time of year we expect to see the property market in full swing, but with the election in play it’s pushed everything back. We’re starting to see some of the movement we’d normally expect in this peak buying and selling season," he says.

Auckland property listings on Trade Me buck the downward trend revealed by the latest QV figures, rising by 2.2% from last year to $925,300.

“If we compare this with October 2010, we can see the massive changes in the Auckland property market over the past seven years. Since 2010, the number of houses for sale has dropped 58 per cent which has forced the average asking price up 88 per cent from a relatively tiny $487,250."

This trend is mirrored in the capital, with average asking prices surging 11.7% from last year.

“While Auckland has stalled in recent months, the capital’s property market has been surging ahead. It’s very common to see the bubble from a large property market spread - first it was the halo regions of Northland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty and now Wellington looks to be the next cab off the rank. We’ve seen consistently strong growth and the market isn’t showing any signs of slowing."

The provinces also performed well in October, with record average prices in Hawke's Bay ($487,300), Manawatu ($309,700) and Waikato ($534,900). Marlborough in the South Island also broke its previous record, with an average asking price of $464,650.
