The Upper Hutt man who saved the pig
Did you know that Staglands Wildlife Reserve founder John Simister played a crucial role in saving the kunekune pig?
Along with Michael Willis, he set off in 1978 in search of kunekune.
The pair traveled the back blocks of New Zealand to find survivors of the species, which was thought to have been introduced to the early 19th century.
At that time, there was thought to be about 60 left.
Kunekune, with their cartoon like features and friendly nature, are now popular pets thanks to the hard work of Simister and Willis.
