Success in breeding kākāriki karaka

One of New Zealand's rarest and most endangered birds has been successfully bred at the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, near Masterton.

Orange-fronted parakeets (kākāriki karaka) were declared extinct twice in 1919 and 1965. Today their wild population number is just 100-300 individuals.

Successful hand-rearing of orange-fronted parakeets is considered extremely unlikely but Pūkaha had very little choice. The five chicks hatched in early August from one of the centre’s two breeding pairs, a male called Karaka and a female called Pōra. Not wanting to disturb the nest, it wasn’t until two weeks of age that rangers noticed that the feathers on the chicks were not developing. A closer inspection revealed that the chicks were bald and that their feathers had been plucked by their parents. Immediate intervention was required because the chicks were at imminent danger of dying from the cold. The only option for the parakeets’ survival was an attempt at hand-rearing.

The young chicks were immediately placed in brooders with heat lamps and fed a diet of parrot rearing formula. It took about three weeks for the chicks to get their feathers. Some six weeks later, all five chicks are fully grown, flying, and eating by themselves.

Upper Hutt Libraries are helping give secondhand eyeglasses new life.

The Recycle for Sight initiative returns to Upper Hutt Libraries during October. Run by Lions Clubs throughout New Zealand, the initiative calls for donations of old or unwanted eyeglasses and sunglasses, which will be checked and refurbished before being fitted to people in need across the Pacific Islands.

After strong community support for the initiative in 2019, council and Upper Hutt Libraries are hoping that locals will again take the opportunity to make a sustainable choice when decluttering their homes and join the growing recycle and reuse movement in Upper Hutt.

Librarian, Rhea Fohs is hopeful locals will again support the initiative.
“We collected 150 pairs and have our fingers crossed for a similar amazing result during this year’s donation drive.”

* Drop-boxes are available at all branches of Upper Hutt Libraries, including Pūrehurehu, the new mobile library.

The second Upper Hutt Repair Cafe, the seed of which was planted on Neighbourly last October, is on this Saturday at the Wesley Centre.
The idea has grown from a discussion on Neighbourly to become a fully registered charity with more than 60 volunteers.
The aim is to encourage people to repair items, rather than replacing them.
“Our focus is to educate, popularise repair over replace and divert usable goods from landfill by teaching repair skills in the community through our events," says organiser Lisa Crawford.
On Saturday you will be able to get a coffee from a barista, as well as getting items fixed.
“This Saturday we are planning on the Repair Cafe being twice as big as the first and we are featuring Sewing Machine and Jewellery Repair in addition to our usual repairs.
What you will find at the Upper Hutt Repair Cafe.
- Featuring Sewing Machine and Jewellery Repair (in addition to electrical, mechanical, sewing, bike repair).
- Learn a skill- make a boomerang bag, upcycled cushion cover, kids pyjamas, bunting- using repurposed fabric samples and waste fabrics from our community. Everything provided, all free, no prior experience needed.
- Recycle unfixable goods on-site with Earthlink.
- Earthlink Kids will feature and sell their sustainable kids clothing collection (made from ex-corporate uniforms).
- In partnership with Food 4 Thought, will be collecting donations of small hand/garden tools for upcoming Upper Hutt Tool Library.

The rugby gods weren’t ready for Colin Mataira.
Three times he turned up at their gates on the afternoon of July 11, and three times they sent him back. The 45-year-old father of five, and grandfather of three, to all intents and purposes died three times when his heart stopped on the 10-metre line of a Napier rugby field that day.

The Queensland Times reports Kimberley Deans, 19, and Wolf Cameron, 23, were two of four people charged by Queensland Police in July over the fraudulent sale of vehicles across Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast.

Queensland Police allege they were part of a group which altered the vehicle identification numbers on stolen and written-off cars before selling them to unsuspecting buyers.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has taken a major step towards reducing its carbon bootprint by purchasing its first electric vehicle (EV) and installing EV charging stations at Trentham Military Camp.

The Hyundai Ioniq will join the fleet at Trentham, where the two Delta 7kW slow charging stations are also available for personnel to charge their private EVs. It is part of the Defence Force’s wider programme towards a more sustainable operation, which fits with the Government’s drive to put more EVs on the roads.

The Trentham trial will determine how many chargers might be needed and how best a booking system might work nation-wide.

Hey neighbours,

In the lead up to the 2020 election, Stuff is keeping voters up to date with what’s happening in their electorate, through Neighbourly. Here’s what you need to know about the candidates in the running to be Te Tai Hauāuru's MP.

At the October 17 election, New Zealanders will have the opportunity to choose their regional spokesperson.

Through the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system, those enrolled can vote for the party they want as well as a local representative.

Why does my MP matter?

The person elected will be the voice for your region in Parliament. If you’re having trouble getting entitlements or dealing with Government departments, they can help. If your community needs funding for certain projects or activities, or there isn’t enough healthcare in the area, the elected MP can step in and help.
