Upper Hutt Christmas Day Community Lunch Unlikely to Happen

Upper Hutt’s Room at the Inn Christmas Day lunch may not happen this year if a new venue and additional resources cannot be found says Rimutaka Lions Club president Steve Watson.

The Club has been working hard to come up with a solution, but are keen to find a resolution., and are now appealing to the public for help.

The Club has run the lunch for nearly 30 years including the last 6 years at Quinn’s Post which is not available this year.

Approximately 150 diners enjoy the free traditional festive meal, another 50 meals are normally delivered to people on the day, giving the Red Cross Meals on Wheels volunteers a day off.

Community support has always been strong for the event either by way of donation of the food, financial donations, or volunteering to help run the event.
The people who attend are mostly living alone or may not be able to afford to go to a restaurant.

Rimutaka Lions Club are keen to hear from anyone who has a suitable venue and is willing to host the lunch, and anyone able to donate resources or their time to help make it happen this year.

Please contact Rimutaka Lions Club NZ via their facebook page .

The bad news for Hutt residents is that it does not include the Hutt Valley.
Lower Hutt mayor Campbell Barry said he was also disappointed by the decision, which he called “short-sighted”.
“I will be writing to Wellington Airport and their new operator to challenge this decision, and ask them to reconsider their commitment to Lower Hutt,” he said.

Despite the bad early morning weather last Saturday we had a fantastic time meeting with members of the community at the Pāuatahanui Lamb & Calf Day.

We had conversations with over 300 people about sediment in our streams, riparian planting, wetlands, pest plants, pest animals and native planting.

Kids got to play with our catchment model to learn about sediment, streams, gullies and wetlands. We did trapping demonstrations and swapped weeds from gardens with gorgeous native plants! 🌱
