Upper Hutt is now the most expensive place in the Wellington region to rent a house, surpassing the capital city and even the median rent across Auckland.
Can people still afford to rent in Upper Hutt?

"Bush robins/toutouwai (Petroica longipes) have an open heart, they roam tramping tracks without fear because it doesn’t occur to them to be afraid. They have no armour on their personalities. If they were humans they would help you change your tyre and laugh about the experience.
They will stand on your shoes if you sit too long. And rummage inquiringly while you unpack your pack. I read once that the open-hearted will inherit the Earth. I hope it’s true – that it is better to be possibly hurt than hardened. But the open-hearted are often preyed upon by the ambitious. It might be why the robin is at risk and declining – he’s just a little too trusting of those that would eat him. Bushy Park, July 2021."

That little (in population) modest city called Upper Hutt is now been awarded whatever for being the most expensive city or town in NZ to rent a house/rental domestic accommodation.

What has gone on to create this monster of unaffordability called Upper Hutt that not many years ago, people wanted a name change because of a reputation of criminality?
Not much as far as I can see. Maybe a whole lot of factors that somehow add up.
Has climate change made UH less icy cold. Has new and improved amenities (Brewtown etc) given UH a breath of fresh air. Has working from home made travel to Wellington and Lower Hutt and over the Haywards less having to frequent. Has more job opportunities locally given a boost. Has new housing raised the bar for renting ( a brand new tightly sized two storied 2 or 3 bedroom apartment style house in the Wallaceville Estate is going for $700 a week rent, $36,000 per annum). Has the many open spaces of UH getting recognition. Has UH as a dog ownership haven, being recognised. Has retailing in UH turning a corner, gaining recognition. Has our close proximity to the Wairarapa - Marinborough in particular - being a factor.

In a press conference Friday afternoon, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed that Auckland and Northland will likely need to complete a further full two weeks at level 4 in order to keep the Delta variant from spreading further in the regions.
Here's what you need to know
- There will be regional boundaries, there will be no travel allowed between regions unless required for essential services.
- Boundaries maintained in the last February lockdown will be reinstated.
- Around 500 locations of interest have been identified.
- The exposure site in Warkworth is a large workplace. Ardern hoped the people of Northland will understand why they're moving with caution. Northland won't always be grouped in with Auckland.
