Upper Hutt Gone In A Blink

Two days ago Upper Hutt had one of the poorest rates for Covid 19 vaccinations in the Wellington region including the Wairarapa. Now it is not.

Either changes happen quicker than the speed of sound or the two pieces of news were dated before they were relaid to the world.

With rent, UH has been superceded by those you would bet your inheritance on as being from number one to number 10.
With vaccinations - only Wellington City with its millions of civil servants, is ahead of UH.

What's next? Sudden stunning proof that Upper Hutt is enjoying a better, warmer climate than Lower Hutt?

"A few bird shots taken over the last couple of days! The tuis do feature very heavily in the shots, as they are such wonderful birds to capture, but I have also managed to find redpoles pecking on the grass at school and a lone Rosella! I also spotted a hedge sparrow peering out from the safe haven of a bush. The waxeyes were having a feast in the school compost bin.
Our resident gammy legged blackbird entertained me as he played with his food, a juicy fat worm, then he flew onto the fence to sing to me! He was with us this time last year and we were so thrilled that he came back again this year!"

The railway crossing just south of the Upper Hutt Railway Station is creating long queues of cars more often through the day than ever previously - and it is just going to get worse and worse. It is the biggest traffic snarl in Upper Hutt.

To compound the problem it is preceded closely by a roundabout on its eastern side and this is also increasing in traffic from all sides so that vehicles are piling up on all four sides when traffic is halted because of trains which maybe minutes from actually passing through the crossing. Vehicles going through the motions of travelling around the roundabout simply prevent other traffic from moving on even if they are not heading to the railway crossing.

Trains have become more frequent and the promise is that frequency will increase too through the double tracks so very soon to be operational and the increase usage of public transport.

This railway crossing needs to be replaced by either an overhead traffic bridge or an underpass. Let's make it urgent so that it actually starts to happen within the next 5 years.

Time is coming quickly when Covid vaccinations will become mandatory in NZ for many.
It seems there is going to be a 5 to 8 percent resistance if things are left as they are. But they won't be left as they are.

The simple facts are vaccinate fully and beat the Coronovirus disease or at least lessen greatly its severity and lessen the chances of passing it on so that people are not having to suffer or be hospitalised and/or die from it and so life can reach some kind of cautious normality.

The Delta variant of the disease must be rendered less damaging, less pervasive.

So teachers and the like will be forced to take the vaccination programme or give up their jobs. People want children to be safe and they are not with unvaccinated adults actively in charge of them.

And it of course wont just stop with those in the teaching and wider teaching profession.

If you have a family member unvaccinated, are they welcome into your home? I guess for most the answer is no.

Is this largely the result of new housing areas in the city?

Two months ago in the Wallaceville Estate a three bedroom, double garage home was sold for 1.3 million. It had a double garage but all the bedrooms were as tight as and no real storage spaces other than built in wardroves. One could construct a garden shed on the property. The garage had been used not for vehicles but as a work-from-home and cinema/tv room. The property had no appreciable views and was tucked away behind high fencing.

Yet maybe this property could now fetch another $100,000 if it was on the market.

Mayor Wayne Guppy is urging Upper Hutt residents to get out and get vaccinated.
Upper Hutt was one pf the lowest vaccine rates in the region and experts warn that if Covid strikes it will hit hard.
His plea comes at a time when the Government is urging all New Zealanders to get vaccinated if they want to enjoy an outdoor summer.
Professor Michael Plank, from Canterbury University, said the Delta variant was “really good” at finding unvaccinated populations such as Upper Hutt.
“We also know that any under-vaccinated groups will be at high risk of experiencing a fast-growing outbreak and suffering from higher rates of severe illness, hospitalisation and death.”
