Something a bit different this week. Louise Thomas features regularly on Neighbourly but it appears she is not the only bird lover in the family.
"This beautiful drawing was a present from my lovely daughter, Caitlin, for my birthday. It's a portrait of a chap who frequents a large tree at the back of our neighbour's section - it borders our section at the back so he is often peering into our yard - this is the view we normally have of him. I've always valued the handcrafted gifts my children give me - looking at them in chronological order is like viewing the ascent of man. This one's going straight to the trophy room. Kererū/wood pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae)."

If the ABs beat the Boks tomorrow evening (our time) in Australia it will be the icing on the cake for a memorable and extraordinarly challenging sporting year for NZ that had us starring/featuring in many different sports events at the hugely successful Olympics.
Spoke to a staff member at Kereru Breweries today in Upper Hutt who didn't know anything about the match up but she ended promising to watch the game on tv with her dad.
Its the 100th test between the All Blacks and the Springboks with the former currently ranked world number one and the latter the current world champions. It will be all so physical and brutal but hopefully the Kiwis will be able to display the silky skills that they have in abundance.
A win will also give NZ the Rugby Championship trophy for yet another year.
Look for the Barrett Trio (who have strong Wellington region connections) to be among the stars. Scott Barrett does so much work and effort that often goes unnoticed.

Australia gets around 80 magnitude 3 or larger earthquakes a year - we get over 15,000 earthquakes annually.
In 1968 a 6.5 quake hit a small WA town and demolished most of it. The largest ever in Australia was 20 years later, a 6.6 in the Northern Territory which caused little damage. And now, just the other day, a 5.9 hit the state of Victoria including Melbourne and caused a few bricks to drop off and frightend more than the police could, a group of Covid vaccination protestors.
What next for Australia - a volcanic erruption for the first time in 5000 years.

We’re looking for people to join one of two reference groups for Plan Change 48.

As part of continuing our review of the Landscape and Ecology chapters of our District Plan, we need local knowledge to help refine our direction to ensure that the planning response supports our community’s wellbeing and our environment.

We’re now seeking expressions of interest for membership on two community reference groups as part of the extended pre-consultation, a suggestion made by speakers at a recent Council meeting.

The proposal is to have an indigenous biodiversity reference group and a separate reference group for important landscapes.

Interested? Go to upperhuttcity.com/pc48 to find out more. Expressions of interest close on 15 October 2021 ⏰

Boy doesn't misinformation fly the kite surrounding the Covid 19 epidemic.
A ZB talkback listener a few days ago tried this on a sometimes naieve host, Nick Mills: something like "we should follow Sweden who have all but eliminated Covid and has opened up its society with no restrictions."

Well here are the bare stats about Sweden and Covid 19 and the delta variant: deaths near 15,000, affected over 1.1 million. Population of Sweden 10 million.

Denmark has declared that Covid will be treated in their country right now as being nothing more than a kind of normal virus.
Well Denmark has had 2600 deaths with 351,000 people affected with the virus. Population of Denmark 5.8 million.

NZ has less than 4000 people who have caught the virus and 27 deaths. Pop 5 million.

Let us not forget that contracting Covid and esp the Delta variant can leave people with permanent health issues and a less than health secure future.

I hope that Sweden and Denmark do reach pass the 90% mark of elligible people fully vaccinated, because this is what NZ has to do.
