Waikato DHB NZNO nurses, healthcare assistants and some midwives will strike for 24 hours from 7am Thursday 12 July to 7am Friday 13 July Services will be severely affected during this time.

To reduce the number of patients in hospital and attending our clinics over the time leading up to and during the proposed industrial action we will be:
- Rescheduling appointments for surgery, treatments and outpatient clinics.
- Giving priority to emergency, critical care and maternity.
- Still providing some essential outpatient clinics such as cancer and dialysis treatments.
- Contacting all patients whose operations or clinic appointments are affected by the strike.

For patients remaining in the wards, these patients will receive higher level nursing cares only. Basic nursing duties will not be performed. We would really appreciate help from patients’ whānau and friends in the wards to provide support with washing, dressing and feeding.

Please save the hospital emergency department for emergencies only. If it’s not an emergency contact your GP, or go to an urgent care centre or call Healthline on 0800 611 116.

Countdown supermarkets are recalling a frozen vegetable mix as a precaution amid fears it could contain a particularly dangerous strain of listeria that has been linked to nine deaths overseas.

The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) confirmed the recalled products have been traced back to a Hungarian facility, known to be the source of the listeria.

A Countdown spokeswoman said the supermarket had been advised there was a potential risk its Bell Farms Steam Veggies, Carrot, Corn and Broccoli bags contained the bacteria.

The company withdrew one batch of the Bell Farms frozen vegetables on Friday from all Countdown, SuperValue, and FreshChoice stores and has since recalled all batches of the product. Anyone who has purchased this product can return it to any of our stores for a full refund.

Frozen vegetables generally pose no risk if cooked correctly before eating, she said. Listeria can cause illness in pregnant woman and their unborn babies, newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

Information on the recall is available here. More information on food safety and listeria can be found here.

An extra $31.82 is now being paid to all couples 65 years and older who receive New Zealand Superannuation. Single superannuitants are receiving $20.46 per week, automatically.

** What does everyone think about the payment? ***
*** Great idea, or a waste of government money as it's not targeted?***

Please write NFP if you'd prefer your comment wasn't used in a print story.

The payment runs for 12 weeks and is to help with increased winter heating costs.
The payment is not means tested.

Winston Peters, who earns $335,000 per annum, is receiving the payment and says he does not intend to refuse it.

People on Jobseeker Support and Sole Parent Support also receive the payment.
