I've seen posts about dogs being banned from Lake Ngaroto and as I walk my dog there fairly frequently, I'm a bit concerned. We both really enjoy this walk.
But while I was there this morning, I was disgusted at the amount of dog poos on the paths - not to the side even, although that's bad enough - and the number of dogs off-lead.
I spoke to one older gentleman as our dogs said hello to each other (both dogs on-leads) and he mentioned that when he went early, he often let his dog off so 'he can go and hunt around. He always catches up with me."
GROW UP PEOPLE! Take responsibility for your animals! It's not that hard to carry a poo bag around, and it's your responsibility! As the signs say, there's no such things as a Dog Poo Fairy. And letting dogs run off lead where there are ground dwelling or nesting birds isn't probably the best way to ensure that dogs are welcome!
If we want to enjoy facilities like Lake Ngaroto, then we have to up our game, and share with care - and yes, that sometimes means carrying a dog poo bag 5k.

But KidsCan is helping. Since October they've been delivering five fresh meals a week to 25 early childhood centres, and kitting out kids with new raincoats and shoes. They want to extend the programme, so no one misses out on learning.
KidsCan, Neighbourly and Stuff have partnered up to raise enough money to feed and clothe 1000 more children under five. To support a child, sign up at KidsCan.org.nz.

I can't believe the Auckland Council allowed them to carry on renting them out for so long. I don't believe they belong on footpaths or on the road. I suppose that as always it will take a serious injury before the authorities close them down permanently. If an elderly or a young person gets hit, it could well be a fatality. I have always understood that footpaths are for foot traffic. (Freedom scooters excepted). No skates, skate-boards, scooters or bicycles, but it seems that over the last 20 or so years it has become open slather for anything that does not require a licence or registration being used on our footpaths. It's bad enough here when school comes out and it becomes a free for all down Alexandra St with bicycles etc. Come on Government, Councils and Police, put an end to the stupidity that has taken over our footpaths.
