Colleen Spiro

Robert from Greerton - Parkvale

Tauranga activist Colleen Spiro remembered as 'warrior for the needy'
A "warrior for the needy and disadvantaged" and a "relentless" woman who fought for people who couldn't fight for themselves.

That's how Tauranga activist and community volunteer Colleen Spiro is being remembered after her death on Sunday, aged 67.

She had long-term health battles but her passing came as a shock to some who loved her.

Spiro was known for her many efforts to help Tauranga's homeless as well as for being outspoken on various council issues, speaking up for Māori and protesting against racism.

Unelected commissioners recommend they stay in power

Pat from Welcome Bay

That's the Stuff headline. I have watched on as these commissioners proselytize about how they respect democracy-and now this. I acknowledge Simeon Brown has rejected their proposal but all I see is these commissioners trying to cling on to power and their sinecure at all costs. It is unbelievable-they should be ashamed. Ms Tolley (who does not live here), Mr Selwood who gets flown up from god knows where, and the other two-spare me the platitudes about how they are only here for the benefit of Tauranga. No you are not. You are paid to impose what you think we want. What is that? An oligarchy? Democracy is not perfect but far better than what you propose. To completely misquote Bertrand Russell-let the people think. By the way Mr Rutherford (my absent aka missing in action BoP MP) if you can deign to read this-show some mettle.

Tauranga Curtain Bank

Waikato Service Centre from Red Cross - Tauranga Service Centre - Greerton

Keeping homes warm with appropriate curtains is essential to maintaining health and wellbeing. Our curtain bank volunteers use their skills to help people living in cold houses. We up-cycle old donated curtains and re-line them before distributing them.

We need volunteers who can sew, and volunteers who can help sort, measure, and pack orders. The curtain bank is open Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning from 9am to 12pm.

Follow the link to find out more and sign up to help families this winter.
