Next steps: Welcome Bay supermarket project

Tauranga City Council

We asked you to have your say on a potential supermarket development in Welcome Bay on Council-owned land and 1,937 of you did! Thank you! The results showed that 66.5% support a potential supermarket, with those in support preferring Waitaha Reserve (56.3%) and Owens Park (25.3%) over Waipuna Park (18.4%). Council has agreed to progress with the review at Waitaha Reserve and Owens Park, but Waipuna Park has be removed from further consideration. The next stage of the review will be in alignment with the Welcome Bay and Ohauiti planning study – an investigation into how Council can address the current issues faced by these areas to accommodate further growth. Don’t forget, there is no commitment from Council that we will use Council-owned land for the development of a supermarket. A more detailed and informed community engagement period will occur, should the investigation be progressed further.
