New sewer pipe install a success – water restrictions lifted

Darren Petry from Taupō District Council

The new Lake Terrace sewer pipe was successfully installed and connected overnight meaning residents could return to normal water usage.

The connection marks a major milestone in the complex repair project required after the washout that occurred on July 2 as it means wastewater is no longer being pumped across the worksite.

Chief executive Gareth Green said this is a huge relief for all involved and clears the way for the next stage of repairs.

“Having to pump wastewater across the worksite has been very challenging, and now that we have our new pipe up and running we can remove that from the equation, focus on finishing the other services and get the road open. We’d like to thank the community for their help by reducing water use in the last 24 hours – it was greatly appreciated – and our contractors and council staff who have been putting in long hours to get to this point. We can all go back to normal water usage now – so there is no longer a need to reduce flushing, showering and baths, and washing machine use in Taupō,” he said.

"This is a great milestone for us all - you've done yourselves proud Taupō!"

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
