It has become an institution on the Taupō musical calendar but the 2020 version has fallen foul of Covid-19 restrictions.
The Big Music Day, which has been running for the last 20 years, involves close to 200 students from primary to secondary school age forming a giant orchestra and rehearsing four or five pieces before a one-off public performance.
But not this year for the event due on September 10.

“Though we don’t yet know whether we would technically be allowed to run this event, we feel that due to its nature, cancelling is the safest and most responsible decision,” said organiser Jo Paull.

“Since we have around 200 participants during the day, we are unable to physically social distance, and many of the instruments require blowing so we are unwilling to take the risk.”

In the 2019 incarnation 175 students attended from Taupō primary and secondary schools as well as homeschool students and a smattering from Rotorua and Tauranga schools.

With parts arranged for about 16 different instruments, the day, organised by the Taupō School of Music is designed to broaden the student’s musical experiences.

As well as learning to cope with different conducting styles and the skill of ensemble playing, such as learning how to count rests, come in on time and adjust volume, it also results in students looking to explore a wider range of music and instruments, said Paull following last year’s Big Music Day.

The call off follows the cancellation of the September 4 midday concert by Cellophonics as some Auckland members from the eight strong cello group had not been able to make rehearsals in Hamilton.

Hi neighbours,

Are you looking for a new pantry staple? A Canterbury restaurateur has launched his own te reo Māori-branded tomato sauce after boycotting another for “bastardising” the language.

Fush owner Anton Matthews has teamed up with Barkers to produce Kīnaki Tomato after removing Watties from his Christchurch restaurant because the company poked fun at Māori place names in an advertising campaign.

Matthews, who has become well-known for championing the country’s indigenous language, is proud to have te reo Māori on sauces displayed on his tables.

When he went in search of a new sauce to accompany his kaimoana (fish) and chips in January, they picked a sauce they loved, and asked the Geraldine-based condiment producer if it could collaborate on a label.

“I’m really stoked that they’ve taken a chance on us.”

1 in 4 New Zealand adults will suffer from a mental disorder or distress at some point in their lives. When they do, let’s make sure they don’t have to go it alone. To create safer, more caring communities we need to not only look after ourselves but those around us as well.

For the month of September, we want to use our voice to raise awareness for mental health and well-being. Perhaps consider sharing a cuppa with someone you know who could use the support or challenge your family and friends to unplug from social media for the entire month to improve their well-being. If you or someone you know is going through a rough patch, don’t forget you can call or text 1737 anytime for FREE support from a trained counsellor.

This month also coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10th) followed by Mental Health Awareness Week (21 - 27 September).

However you choose to take part, make sure to tag us in your posts + use the following hashtag so we can see how you’re cultivating better mental health for yourself or in your community this month:
