North Canterbury pupils join fight to reduce speed limit outside their school
Year 7 and 8 pupils at Swannanoa School worked with Lucinda Rees, the founder of advocacy group NZ School Speeds, to use the Speed Clock app to record the speed of vehicles passing the school on Tram Rd last Thursday afternoon.
It comes after Transport Minister Michael Wood last month announced the Government's proposal to drop speed limits to 30 kmh outside urban schools and a maximum of 60 kmh outside rural schools.
Rees said many Swannanoa pupils were “horrified” to hear the speed limit was so high around their school and that any potential changes may not happen until 2029.
Submissions on the proposed changes can be made online at www.nzta.govt.nz... or by emailing rules@nzta.govt.nz until June 25.
